First off, If you are unfamiliar with WHY WE WERE IN AUSTIN FOR A MONTH, then you have some catching up to do.. Within the first couple days of our stay, we got close with a lot of great people with whom we were able to create relationships that are sure to last a lifetime.. you know who you are & we love YOU! By the end of the trip we had performed way more shows than we had planned on and while SXSW did it's best to defeat us, I can safely say we kicked it's ass. But it sure did put up one hell of a fight.. SXSW definitely puts the "AUSTIN" in "exhAUSTINg".. Overall, we had such an incredible time living in Austin, TX for the month of March that words alone really can't do it complete justice. SOLILLAQUISTS OF SOUND @ SXSW 2010 - LIVE REVIEW
Solillaquists of Sound have bar-none one of the best live shows I have ever seen. Somehow a group that writes the most thought-provoking and challenging lyrics in hip hop today manages to hit you with their message while still turning the crowd into a frenzy. SOS blends sweet poetry, quick delivery, amazing jazz vocals and the monster, aka DiViNCi. Three MCs live is unique while adding complex elements. Solillaquists are currently supporting their fall release No More Heroes and have brought comic book-type signs and capes to pull out the stops, making their show almost as much theater as it is rap show. This group is so hard to define that you should just check out their SXSW performance (above) and let DiViNCi blow your mind.
SOLILLAQUISTS ECSTATIC ABOUT FIRST 'RESIDENCY' by Jim Abbott (swiped from the Orlando Sentinel) Touring the old-fashioned way, in a series of one-night stands, might be a grind, but plenty of energy is required to immerse yourself in a musical community for a month, too. "I'm so exhausted, but in a good way," says DiViNCi, producer and MPC mastermind for Solillaquists of Sound. Orlando's progressive hip-hop ambassadors are on the way back to Orlando from a monthlong "residency" in Austin, Texas, the first in a series of "Hometown Heroes" excursions that the group hopes might catch on enough to revolutionize the old one-night stand concept. I caught up with DiViNCi and bandmates Swamburger, Alexandrah and Tonya Combs by phone from a stop in Baton Rouge, La. Even at the tail end of a long day's drive, the euphoria of a month in the Live Music Capital of the World and a showcase at the mammoth South By Southwest Music Conference was enough to keep the adrenaline pumping. "I lamented leaving a little, even though the band had been there a month," DiViNCi says. "There was so much more I wanted to do with those people." The "Hometown Heroes' concept is a spin-off on the themes of No More Heroes, the Solillaquists' sophomore album on the LA-based ANTI- label. The idea is to spend time bonding organically with fans and learning about the popular culture in other cities. After a brief turn-around in Florida, the group will next be on the way to Paris for another monthlong stay. Swamburger, who came up with the idea, is ecstatic about how it has worked out so far. "I am really pushing for the creation of something new," Swamburger says. "This is about allowing bands to communicate ideas greater than just their music." In the age of an overwhelming flood of music via digital downloads, the residency approach is a way to emphasize the human element again, Swam says. "I really think it can change the face of music," he says. "With this, there's more of a need for the musicians. I mean, they can't download your identity." OTHER LINKS & ARTICLES
